Vinyl stickers: the pros, the cons and the options

Welcome! We are here to talk all about custom vinyl stickers. We’re going to dig into the bad bits and explain the good things about vinyl stickers.

We’re also going to compare different available options on the market so you can see what is best for your application.

So if you’re in the market for some custom stickers or labels for a robust application that needs more durability, you’re in the right place.

What is a vinyl sticker?

All vinyl stickers get made from a particular type of material – plastic.

Years ago, vinyl stickers used to be the shortened way of saying polyvinylchloride or PVC stickers. But PVC is rarely used these days because of its environmental impact. It’s been replaced with alternatives that are much easier to recycle, such as polypropylene (PP) or polyethylene (PE).

So now, the term vinyl stickers is generally used to describe any type of plastic sticker.

What are the options?

Vinyl stickers have been around longer than any other type of sticker. This has the benefit of meaning a wide variety of different colours and types of final materials are available on the market.

The key difference between vinyl stickers is the colour. And you can use different colours to give your design various effects. The image below shows just how extensive the range is and how different colours can give you beautiful custom stickers.

What are the pros of vinyl stickers?

There is one significant benefit when getting vinyl stickers, and that is the durability of the sticker.

Plastic stickers are just more robust than any other type of sticker, even the environmentally friendly alternatives. This is a shame but also gives you confidence that when you buy this type of sticker, you’re getting The very best durability for your application.

Plastic stickers will withstand knocks, bumps, scratches, and even being rained on or covered with harsh chemicals such as alcoholic cleaner. This makes them great for general use applications, such as laptop stickers.

Another big benefit of vinyl stickers is that they are so widely available in many different colours. So whatever effect you’re trying to achieve, you can generally get there with a custom vinyl sticker.

What are the cons of vinyl stickers?

As we alluded to in the previous section, the biggest drawback to a vinyl sticker is that it’s not the most environmentally friendly.

Polypropylene and polyethylene are both reasonably easy to recycle, but as we are aware, recycling isn’t the best option. Ideally, materials degrade when in the right environment, such as being composted.

However, there is good news.

There are more plastic alternatives on the market than ever before. Materials made from wood pulp are coming onto the market that are compostable, and even some in-home conditions. So you can literally throw the sticker on the compost at home, and it completely degrades within a matter of months. Amazing!

Now, these generally aren’t quite as durable as a vinyl sticker, but they get pretty close, considering the environmental benefits are a great option. These eco-friendly stickers are a great example.

Thank you for reading. We hope you’re now ready to go and get your very own custom vinyl stickers. Bye!
